Many of us rely on the power and convenience of data-driven apps to sail through tasks that would otherwise break up the flow of our day. Behind each smooth-sailing data-driven app experience is an engine room full of specialized expertise: the administrators who provision, clone, patch, and configure the databases that keep our apps moving at speed. Each manual step consumes admin attention, creates potential for errors, and can slow service or hinder development timelines. As the number of databases and application teams grows, the hands-on management burden scales right along with it, which is why the way a platform handles routine database operations increasingly shapes end-user experiences. Automated, self-service database lifecycle management tools can provide organizations with a way to scale reliable database services without increasing expensive manual IT effort at the same rate. 

We used hands-on tests to investigate ways that one such tool—VMware Data Services Manager (DSM)—can help developers and administrators handle private-cloud PostgreSQL database operations. We compared the time and effort required to complete five common database management scenarios using both DSM and a manual approach. We measured provisioning a new database, cloning an existing database, patching a database, provisioning a three-node high-availability (HA) cluster, and scaling a single-node database out to a three-node HA cluster. We used the same underlying environment for both methods. 

Across every scenario we tested, DSM completed the task faster than the manual approach. DSM cut provisioning time by 33 percent, cloning time by 29 percent, and patching time by 46 percent. The gap widened further for high-availability tasks: DSM reduced the time to provision a three-node HA cluster by 79 percent and cut the time to scale an existing database out to a three-node HA cluster by 84 percent, a savings of more than 32 minutes on that task alone. 

Our results indicate that VMware DSM can meaningfully reduce the administrative time and effort needed to manage PostgreSQL databases compared to manual methods, particularly for HA operations. By reducing the operational complexity of running a private-cloud database environment and reclaiming IT team bandwidth, organizations could respond more quickly to shifting application requirements and ensure a smoother experience for administrators and customers alike.
